Balmain Interview Menswear Spring/Summer 2016 - Paris

The Balmain man is found for the first time in a show during menswear fashion week. The Balmain man is found for the first time in a show during menswear fashion week. An adventurer in a safari jacket and in desert coloured cargo pants. The leather and suede are omnipresent, for the braided jackets, adorned with rivets, buttons, and snap fasteners. To accompany this man the woman follows and precedes him in a crochet mini dress and in a laced safari jacket.

A Balmain man takes on embroideries and sparkle. Badges, jackets with shoulder pads, open rangers on the front of the feet make reference to military uniforms. 4 ½ years after his arrival to artistic director at Balmain, Olivier Rousteing ups the tempo. With 40% turnover taken from the menswear market, the transition to the catwalk show seems totally justified!

Olivier Rousteing Interview:
I think that Balmain is a world which really brings together men-women, couples, globality, diversity so for me it was essential and logical to have this transition and to do menswear today, to push it forward because Balmain menswear is 40% of revenue so it was really well deserved to do a show also for my buyers and fans of Balmain.

He’s an adventurer, he’s a man who goes out into the desert, who wants to discover the world, who’s not scared of the horizon, who’s not scared of the unknown, who travels, and it’s an important show for me because when doing the first show you want to look back in 6 years to the first show and feel proud of what you’ve done, and so for me it’s a man who is going to discover the world and it’s a bit like what I’m doing with my first show, I’m a bit like the voice of this adventurer.

For me it’s important to also keep a useful side, a relaxed side because it’s also the strength of my man who can also be and feel couture and rich, with unique pieces but at the same time this person who is also sporty who feels like they’re in pyjamas even when wearing a completely couture jacket.
